SUGGESTED PAINTING TOUR – CYCLADES
Day 1: ATHENS
Arrival in Athens – assistance and transfer to the hotel. Balance of day at leisure.
Overnight in Athens.
Day 2: ATHENS
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning city tour of Athens which will give you the opportunity to observe the striking contrasts that make
Athens such a fascinating city. Your guide will take you to the center: Constitution Square, the House of Parliament, the Memorial to
the Unknown Soldier. Driving down Herod Atticus street you will see the Evzones in their picturesque costume and the Presidential
Palace. On your way to the Acropolis you will see the Panathenaic stadium (where the first Olympic Games of the modern era were
held in 1896) and the Athens of the 2nd century A.D., the temple of Olympian Zeus and the Adrian’s Arch. On the Acropolis visit its
museum and the architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: the Propylaea, the temple of Athena Nike, the Erechteion
and finally, the “harmony between matter and spirit”, the monument that “puts order in the mind”, the Parthenon. Your guide will leave
you in Plaka where you will have free time for lunch and painting the picturesque neighborhood of Plaka just below the Acropolis.
Overnight in Athens.
Day 3: ATHENS - PIRAEUS - MYCONOS
Breakfast at the hotel. Early morning transfer to the port of Piraeus. Embarkation on the ferry to Myconos and sailing at 08h00. After 6
hours arrival in Myconos – assistance and transfer to the hotel. Balance of day at leisure to discover hidden corner of the picturesque
town of Myconos. The town with its colorful harbor presents quite a different picture from that of the majority of the Aegean islands
towns. While most villages are built in amphitheatrical fashion on a hillside, the town of Myconos is spread out over a flat area and
projects an image of indissoluble esthetic cohesion. The brilliant white cubic houses with their balconies and white-washed parapets
which are built close together one on top of the other, the wonderful churches, charming little taverns and stores selling items of folk
art and other goods, that are all clostered in the narrow alleyways some how give the impression of being indoor.
Overnight in Myconos.
Day 4: MYCONOS - DELOS
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning transfer to the port and take a small “kaiki” to go to Delos. According to the mythology, Delos was
the birthplace of the god Apollo and his sister Artemis. This uninhabited island is one vast archeological site and its remarkable
monuments today attract throng of visitors who come to pay homage to a place that was the cultural and religious center of the
Aegean from the 9th century B.C. for approximately a thousand years. The archeological site, which extends over almost the whole
length of the island, starts on the Western side where the Sacred Port was located in the ancient times. The remains of four temples
dedicated to the god Apollo can still be seen, one of which is known as the temple of the Athenians. To the North lies the Sacred Lake
with the Terrace of the Lions. After the visit have free time for painting and return to Myconos.
Overnight in Myconos.
Day 5: MYCONOS - PAROS
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the port. Take the ferry boat to the island of Paros. After approximately 3 hours trip arrival in Paros
– assistance and transfer to the hotel. Balance of day at leisure and free time for painting some picturesque corners of Parikia. Paros
is the third largest of the Cyclades after Naxos and Andros. Two natural bays, at Naoussa in the North and Parikia in the West,
dominate the island’s indented coastline with lots of smaller bays. Parikia, the island’s port and main town with its picturesque
semi-ruined Venetian castro, stands on the site of the ancient town. The white island-style houses are decorated with pots of basil
and overhung with jasmine and honeysuckle. Narrow paved streets lead to the church of Ekatondapyliani (the church of the one
hundred gates) which is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Greece and figures in many of the country’s legends.
Overnight in Paros.
Day 6: PAROS - NAOUSSA
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning departure to Naoussa, one of the prettiest villages on the island with its white washed houses,
narrow cobbled ways, little arcades and tiny churches. The village has some captivating beaches which are very popular with visitors.
Amongst these is Kolimbithres with its singular rocks formations that look like giant sculptures fixed to the sand. Free time for
painting some characteristic corners of the small harbor and swimming. Overnight in Paros.
Day 7: PAROS - SANTORINI
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning transfer to the port and departure by ferry to the island of Santorini. Arrival in Santorini after
approximately 4 hours – assistance and transfer to the hotel. Balance of day at leisure. The celebrated island of Santorini is different
from the rest of the Cyclades group by virtue of its interesting geological structure, the result of the eruptions of a now inactive volcano.
The landscape is extremely imposing on the Western side of the island, where little houses are perched on top of gigantic steep
rocks that plunge abruptly into the sea. From the port of Scala, the visitor can either walk up to the main town of Fira or he can hire
a donkey or go by cable car. Fira is an attractive little town with narrow, windy streets and arcades, and the old Frankish quarter is
specially picturesque. There is a magnificent view over the Kamenes , the two black islands which were created when the volcano
erupted. Overnight in Santorini.
Day 8: SANTORINI - OIA
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at leisure for painting. In the afternoon excursion to he picturesque village of Oia, 11 km North of Fira,
which has an outstanding beauty of its own. Little houses built out of the soft rock, some white other painted in tints of azure blue or
ochre, neo classical mansions with courtyards and narrow paved streets, all contribute to the unique spectacle presented by the
village, which commands a superb view out over the Aegean Sea. Free time for painting and admiring the spectacular sunset.
Overnight in Santorini.
Day 9: SANTORINI - AKROTIRI - KAMARI
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning visit the site of Akrotiri. Here the ruins of the Minoan city destroyed by an eruption of the island’s
volcano around 1500 B.C. have been uncovered. Many two-and three storey buildings, town squares, shops, workshops, etc were
found here under volcanic ash like a prehistoric Pompei. Some marvelous wall paintings, now exhibited in the national museum in
Athens, were discovered in the houses along with pots and many everyday objects. After the visit departure to the seaside resort of
Kamari for a relaxing afternoon. Time for painting and swimming. Overnight in Santorini.
Day 10: SANTORINI
Breakfast at the hotel. All day at leisure – possibility to have a boat trip to the volcano and hot springs. Overnight in Santorini.
Day 11: SANTORINI - PIRAEUS - ATHENS
Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning transfer to the port. Embarkation on the ferry boat to Piraeus. After 9 hours arrival in Piraeus
– assistance and transfer to the hotel in Athens. Overnight in Athens.
Day 12: ATHENS - CAPE SOUNION
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning at leisure. Early afternoon departure to Cape Sounion. Driving along the coastal road, past the nice
resorts of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza,etc… to the Southernmost point of Attica, Cape Sounion. On the way you will have splendid
views of the Saronic Gulf and the little islets offshore. After a short visit to the temple of Poseidon free time for painting the ruins and
the seascape. Return to Athens. Overnight in Athens.
Day 13: ATHENS Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to the airport.
